5 Simple And Fun-Filled Games For PE Teachers
15 August 2016
Are you’re students bored of the same old dreary games that have been around since their parents, or even their grandparents were at school?
Today kids are very used to having the latest gadgets, access to incredible technology, and an ever changing world of new and exciting things to interact and play with.
However, for many schools this comes to a crashing halt when students enter the classroom or the playground. And teachers are left wondering why students are not engaging with the class and why they’re failing to maintain their attention.
For the PE teacher, one thing that can help shake up tired routines and exhausted sports can be an influx of new games.
Give these five simple and fun-filled games a try in your classes, at the very least they will keep you students on their toes!
Untying the Knot (Suitable for ages 5-11)
In groups of an even number, students must stand facing inwards and tightly together. Placing their left hands in the circle, each student should grab someone else's hand. After which they do they same with their right hands. Without letting go of each other's hands, students must work as a team to untangle the knot and free all the crossed arms.
Sticky Witches (Suitable for ages 5-11)
Sticky witches is a team game, similar to tig, which can be used with children of all ages. To start, split your students into small groups and allocate each of them a place where they have to stand once they’ve been tug.
Depending on how many students are in a group, choose 1/2/3 people to be ‘on’, with the rest of them sitting on the ground with their hands on their heads. The students who are on do 5 jumps and on the 4th those sitting have to run off and avoid being tagged before the time limit is up. Anyone who is caught stands in their place and attempts to reach out and tig those who have still not been tug.
Through the Hoop (Suitable for ages 5-11)
In groups of 10, ask students to form small circles and offer each of them a hoop. The students must link hands, placing the hoop in the circle over the arms of two of the group’s members.
Students then have a time limit to step through the hoop without any hands being unlinked. The first team to get the hoop back to its initial position wins. Of course, cheaters must start again!
Star Wars Dodgeball (Suitable for ages 7-11)
An american theme game, Star Wars Dodgeball is a creative way to add a little pop culture to a traditional game.
Each student has a ball and has to throw them at the other team. When a player is hit, they must sit down. The first team to have all the other team sat down wins. One player has the special power of the Jedi Knight which allows them to touch sat down team mates and bring them back in the game. Who this will be is a team choice, and once the Jedi is hit, nobody can be saved, making it imperative to protect them at all costs!!
