AI education initiative from London private school

The London private school David Game College recently revealed its new ‘teacherless’ class – the first of its kind in the UK.

Twenty GCSE students will learn on their computers combined with virtual reality headsets bespoke lessons designed by an artificial intelligence platform.

This AI education, supported by three human ‘learning coaches’ employed to monitor behaviour and provide support will cost parents around £27,000 per annum. The learning coaches will also be responsible for teaching subjects with which AI currently struggles, such as art and sex education.

The college says that the class will allow for ‘precise, bespoke learning’. However, some have raised concerns about the removal of humanity from teaching and a potential overstep of AI usage within the classroom.

The AI technology is designed to learn each student’s strengths and weaknesses and create bespoke lesson plans for each child throughout the term.

Co-principal at David Game College, John Dalton said, "There are many excellent teachers out there but we're all fallible.

"I think it's very difficult to achieve [AI's] level of precision and accuracy, and also that continuous evaluation.

"Ultimately, if you really want to know exactly why a child is not learning, I think the AI systems can pinpoint that more effectively."

David Game College GCSE student Joseph – who has been testing the new system - said, "A teacher doesn't really know your flaws because he has so many students."

"So, he doesn't know your flaws while the AI will figure out what your flaws are and help you improve."

Sky News reported that Former Special Educational Needs (SEN) Latin teacher Alexander Vansittart has joined the college as one of its learning coaches. He commented, "I got really excited about what this could do for young people, how it could help them change their lives. That's why I applied for the job; because I believe this will change lives.
