Worst-polluting vehicles to pay double for parking under new payment structures
07 August 2023
Councils throughout the UK are implementing new car parking charges based on vehicle emissions, meaning that those driving the heaviest polluting vehicles could pay double.
Several councils in the London area have already implemented these charges, and Lambeth is the latest to do so with 26 different charges for 1 hour of parking. The charge depends on the vehicle’s tax band and diesel surcharge.
For example, parking for 1 hour at a bay near Waterloo station can cost between £6.30 and £13.23, depending on the above factors.
These emissions-based charges are being introduced following a consultation which also considered a new pricing structure for residents’ parking permits.
Permits are already based on emissions, but the yearly cost of the highest band has increased from £340.73 to £500 and now includes an additional diesel surcharge of £140.
The new parking charge structure comes in line with a switch from pay-as-you-go parking machines to mobile apps.
Apps such as RingGo and PayByPhone provide the means for car park operators to identify the tax band of a vehicle using its number plate.
