The Top 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teachers

We all know the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ which has sold millions and millions of copies across the globe. Given that childhood education plays a concrete part in succeeding in life, it would really be telling to talk about the habits of highly effective teachers.

The question of what makes a great teacher isn't a novel one. It is however one that has failed to bring a definitive answer, simply because there’s no one set recipe that makes for success.

In a report by The Sutten Trust, researchers have taken a different approach by gathering the common traits of effective teachers, rather than providing a single ultimate model. They’ve identified the popular habits that make for great teaching, and in this short round-up article we’re going to share the 5 most noteworthy.

1. Recognising learning is hard at first

Short term approaches that stretch the student’s ability can benefit a student’s progress rather than hinder them. One way this can be done is by varying and personalising the types of tasks students participate in; it may be initially met with a lot of groans, but it will soon pay off.

2. Impeccable classroom and time management

Good classroom management, which involves utilising resources and controlling behaviour, is not only a great way to manage students but also make effective use of classroom time. A cornerstone of effective classroom management is clear and decisive instructions, which although are not demanding, are fully assertive in their manner.

3. Understanding praise can do more harm then good

There are two types of praise, the right and the wrong type. Get it wrong, and it can be harmful for students. Praise is always encouraging but it can convey a teachers low expectations. What’s more, if a students’ progress is met with sympathy rather than disappointment, it can lead to the student thinking they’d done badly due to a lack of ability.

4. Nurturing teacher-student relationships

Individual relationships between students and teachers, both inside and outside the classroom, can make a significant impact on the functioning of the classroom as a whole. Affirming a student’s self worth can be the difference between constant disruption and abiding attention.

5. Truly knowing your subject

One of the most important elements of a good teacher is knowledge about the subject. It may seem obvious, but having a deep and detailed knowledge of a particular area will have the biggest impact on student’s learning.

There are many commonalities shared by successful teachers. These are just a handful, but each and every one of them is crucial for effective teaching and effective learning. Employ them in your classrooms today and you’ll be sure to see a difference in students — and yourself — in no time.
